Tragedy in Plateau: Polytechnic Student and One Other Killed in Late-Night Gunmen Attack
HEIPANG, PLATEAU STATE — The fragile peace in the Ban community of Heipang, located in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, was shattered on Wednesday night as unidentified gunmen launched a deadly assault, leaving two dead and several others fighting for their lives.
The Midnight Ambush
According to local sources and reports from Vanguard, the attackers stormed the quiet community at approximately 11:00 PM on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. Eyewitnesses describe a scene of chaos as the gunmen, reportedly armed with sophisticated weapons, opened fire indiscriminately on residents.
The darkness of the night provided cover for the assailants, who retreated before security operatives could arrive on the scene. In the wake of the gunfire, multiple victims were found with life-threatening bullet wounds and were immediately rushed to nearby medical facilities for emergency treatment.
A Loss for the Academic Community
Tragedy struck further when it was confirmed that one of the deceased was a student of the Plateau State Polytechnic. The student, who had been receiving treatment for severe gunshot injuries, succumbed to his wounds in the early hours of the following day.
The death of the student has sent shockwaves through the institution. The second victim, a resident of the Ban community, was reportedly killed on the spot during the initial volley of gunfire.
Panic and Insecurity Among Students
The proximity of the Ban community to the Plateau State Polytechnic has sparked intense fear and anxiety among the student body. Those living in off-campus hostels are particularly distressed, as many feel vulnerable to the recurring waves of violence that have plagued the Barkin Ladi axis.
"We no longer feel safe in our own rooms," one student stated under the condition of anonymity. "The gunshots were loud and persistent. Many of us spent the night under our beds, praying for daylight."
Security Response and Rising Tensions
While security agencies are expected to increase patrols in the Heipang area, the motive behind this latest attack remains unclear. Residents are calling on the State Government and the Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) task force to bolster security measures around student-heavy communities to prevent further loss of life.
As of Thursday morning, a somber mood hangs over the Polytechnic and the surrounding settlements. Friends and classmates of the deceased student have begun mourning, even as the community demands justice for the victims of this senseless violence.
